PROJECT 01 · INSTITUTIONAL CAMPUS
The Hamlet
Berlin, Massachusetts · 80,000+ SF · Est. $15–20M
The Hamlet is an 80,000+ SF institutional campus in Berlin, Massachusetts — a village conceived as a training and earning ground for young adults. The client's vision drew from the Italian piazza tradition: a sequence of interconnected civic spaces — courtyard, arcade, greenhouse clusters, equestrian grounds — organised around a central communal heart. As Principal-in-Charge, the project was led from programming and stakeholder engagement through design development and site coordination, managing a team spanning architecture, civil, geotechnical, environmental, and landscape disciplines. A defining design challenge was the application of woonerf principles — the Dutch shared-street system — to the internal campus circulation, integrating pedestrian movement, landscape, and reduced-speed vehicle access into a unified site experience.
